Recently the world shifted on its axis. No it wasn’t from a catastrophic event but rather hordes of women heading towards their neighborhood Sephora for the launch of Rhianna’s new cosmetic line Fenty Beauty by Rihanna. The line launched on September 8th and I swear my timeline blew up with images of tightly clenched product boxes and confessions of paychecks being spent. It got real real, real quick!
Now for me it wasn’t that deep…initially. I actually didn’t even know the line was launching or that it was even in development. Usually, I’m not the type of girl that needs something the moment it comes out. I have, in the past, stood in line for a product launch but these days I am ok being a little uncommon (see what I did there!) and joining in a little late if at all. This time, however, I decided to step outside the norm and grab a few things just to see what it was all about.
I walked into Sephora and was met by the store “Fenty girl” as she called herself. She just so happened to be the only one in the store who was trained on the entire line. She not only walked me through each product but gave me behind the scenes details on how the line was developed and the secrets of each product. I have compiled a listing of the products I purchased and used for the past few days in hopes it helps you navigate the line and take full advantage of the products.
Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation
This is actually the reason why I decided to try the line. Fenty Beauty launched with 40 shades of foundations! That is almost unheard of in the beauty industry. The line is split between four color groups; light (shades 100 – 190), medium (shades 200 – 290); tan (shades 300 – 390); and deep (shades 400 – 490). This product was actually the first to be developed because Rihanna saw a void in the market and wanted to make sure that everyone could find a foundation that matched their skin tone.
This is perhaps the lightest weight foundation that I have ever used. The packaging describes this foundation as being “medium to full coverage” while being “light as air”. It dries to a powder like finish that you honestly can’t feel once it’s on. For my oily skin I find that I can use 1 full pump of product for my whole face and if I need a little extra coverage I can spot cover where I want. The foundation does not oxidize throughout the day (see my Fenty tip below) and it doesn’t move. I can saw from my experience that where ever you put it in the morning is wear it will be when you get home.
FENTY TIP: This foundation actually warms in color when applied to the skin to create the perfect match. I would test your shade in person before purchasing to ensure you are getting the perfect match. I came in thinking I was a 460 and ended up being 420!
PRO TIP: Place the foundation on the skin with your finger tips and then blend out with a damp Fenty Beauty Precision Makeup Sponge or a Beauty Blender
Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo
I purchased the Ginger Binge/Moscow Mule compact and have used it every day since. This highlighter is so buttery it’s crazy. The butter-like texture is due to milling, or the grinding, of the powder. Basically this means that when you use it, it is smooth and velvety. One thing that has to be said is that this is a very glitter forward palette. What I mean by that is the glitter pieces in the colors are on the larger side. So if you use one of the colors as a blush it can almost be too much to place the other color on top. I stuck with one color at a time and was happy with the results. The color options tend to lend themselves to the 4 shade ranges in the foundation as well so it makes selecting the right palette for your skin tone a no brainer.
FENTY TIP: Use the darker of the two shades as your blush color
PRO TIP: Wet you brush before sweeping across your cheek for a more intense highlight
Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick & Match Stix Matte Skinstick
These are perhaps my favorite products in the line. Both remind me of the NARS multiples in that they can be used in different ways. The shimmer stick is marketed as a cream blush. When I was experimenting I actually used on the eyes, lips and cheeks. Because my skin is oily I did find applying the primer on the lid first kept the color place. The matte stick is a perfect concealer stick and for me I didn’t have to bake (pressing setting powder into concealer and letting it sit on for a few minutes) to keep it in place! Setting my concealer is almost a must for me but RiRi managed to develop a formula that stays put!
FENTY TIP: The tubes are magnetic so when throwing them in your bag click them together so they don’t get lost
PRO TIP: If you don’t want the full coverage of the foundation use the matte skin stick like a foundation stick for a light sheer coverage
Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer
Placing “universal” in the name of this lip gloss was such a good idea because it truly is a universal product. The rosy-nude shade is complementary on ALL skin tones and the lip gloss is surprisingly smooth and not sticky. When layered with another lip color it amplifies and creates a perfect compliment.
FENTY TIP: Layer the shimmer stick and the gloss to create unique colors
PRO TIP: Place a small amount of gloss in the center of your lips to create a fuller looking lip
Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer
This is hands down is my new primer. The first feature is that this primer is actually slightly tinted a soft pink. Some primers leave behind a white cast to the skin but not with this one. The soft tint almost has a brightening effect on the skin that comes through when the foundation is applied. The other feature that works for me is that it feels more like a moisturizer. It is thinner in comparison to other primers which actually contributes to that weightless feeling.
FENTY TIP: The primer dries down to a tacky texture so that the foundation has something to adhere to. Creating a longer wearing look.
PRO TIP: For combination skin, only apply primer to you oily areas to create a lighter felling application.
OK, so after almost a week later I am in LOVE! I’m not talking about that “oh you’re kinda cute and you have a good job” kind of love. I’m talking about the “you need to put a ring on it like yesterday because you are my boo FOREVA” type of love. What some of you don’t know is that I am a freelance makeup artist so when I experience a new product I think about it as an everyday customer but I also look at it from an artist’s perspective. That means that Fenty Beauty had to live up to my basic expectations and my pro expectations and trust me…SHE DID THAT.
There are aspects of this line that hit it out of the park but there are a few that don’t fit my particular taste but are still fantastic. I think that this is a very “glowy” collection. There is a lot of shimmer and glitter in the mix. Depending on your preference this may work for you and it may not. If it’s not I would still pick it up because every can benefit from a highlight! I’m sure you can already guess that this is not the only set of products that she will come out with. I’m anxious to see her take on eye and lip products. What I have been told is that you can expect the next round closer to the holidays unless the plan changes. I think this was a fantastic start for a product line and should definitely be enjoyed by everyone!
